Arguably the most renowned wine growing region in the world Bordeaux is to be found in the south west of France south of the Loire and north of the Pyrenees .Chateaux such as Palmer, Margaux, Haut Briand and Petrus are famous the world over. These may produce wines out of reach to most mere mortals but there are plenty of labels that are less well known but every bit as interesting and enjoyable. The dominant grapes in the region are Cabernet Sauvignon,Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The rarified super star chateaux are in many cases now owned by faceless foreign conglomerates so try seeking out the real vignerons who have been tilling the same vineyards for generations.
