Wiltshire wins hands down when it comes to the prehistory stakes - containing not one but two world heritage sites , namely Avebury and Stonehenge. They may well be large stones that were lugged an awfully long way but by whom and for what reason nobody really knows. That merely adds to the mystery -even the briefest visit to either site induces a sense of wonder . Don't just drive past and take a momentary glimpse.
