Most famous for its broads and mysterious fens where man has fought valiantly with nature for centuries. Tourism now wins the day over fishing although great fish restaurants abound and a glass of something fizzy with a dozen oysters verges on the obligatory. Admiral Lord Nelson was born and raised in Norfolk and Benjamin Britten the composer and WH Auden the poet went to school there. The northern coast especially around Burnham is hugely popular with surfers, and yachtsmen alike. Head inland , avoiding the throng at all costs, sit very still and very quiet for quite a long time and who knows the boom of the bittern may meet with your forbearing ear.
